1986 – The world’s longest war ends without a single shot having been fired

The Three Hundred and Thirty Five Years’ War was an allegedstate of war between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly. It is said to have been extended by the lack of a peace treaty for 335 years without a single shot being fired, which would make it one of the world’s longest wars and a bloodless war. Peace was finally declared in 1986, bringing an end to any war that may have been legally considered to exist.

How do you forget that a ‘State of War’ exists for over 3 centuries?

The worst thing is this is not the only bizarre occurrence of things being forgotten about in law. While we may not abide them the following laws still technically exist in England…

1) Getting drunk in a pub

Yep, it is illegal to be intoxicated in a licensed premises and any persons found to be in breach may be subject to a £200 fine.

2) Asking a stranger for parking change

We’ve all had it, you park up and go to pay at the machine before realising you don’t quite have enough change so you ask a passerby or another driver waiting to pay if they have 10p to help you out. Well if you are caught doing this you could face a month in a “House of Correction” under the Vagrancy Act of 1824.

3) Handling a salmon suspiciously

According to Section 32 of the Salmon Act 1986 it is illegal “to handle a salmon in suspicious circumstances”.
